Phantom Blade Zero Just Rewrote the Rules for Single-Player Game Launches

S-GAME’s wuxia action RPG Phantom Blade Zero launched on October 29 and immediately set the gaming world on fire. The game reached a record of 833,921 peak concurrent users on Steam on November 1, making it the highest single-player Steam peak of 2026. This easily surpassed major releases such as Wardogs (428,666), Resident Evil Requiem (344,214), Forza Horizon 6 (302,645), The Blood of Dawnwalker (78,188), and Gears of War: E-Day (31,517).

The momentum did not stop at player counts. Chinese developer S-GAME announced that Phantom Blade Zero sold over 4 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC in just 72 hours. That works out to 926 units sold per minute, or about 15.4 per second, over the first three days. The game is only available digitally for now on PS5 and PC, but three physical editions are launching in 2027.

Critics and players share the enthusiasm. The game earned Metacritic scores of 88 on PC and 87 on PS5, with user scores of 93 on PS5 via Metacritic, 89% on Steam, and a 4.71 out of 5 on the PlayStation Store. IGN awarded it a 9/10 calling it a game with “memorable boss fights, compelling combat, and limitless swagger,” while Wccftech gave it a perfect 10/10 and GamesRadar awarded it a 9/10, calling it “a GOTY contender with combat that looks as good as it feels.” Fans on Steam praise the flashy, varied combat, the weapon and boss variety, and solid performance on PC.

By enlisting martial arts film star Donnie Yen as a consultant to incorporate real martial arts techniques into the combat system, S-GAME carved out a niche dubbed “kung-fu punk.” The story follows Soul, a warrior framed for the murder of his master who is left with a devastating wound to the heart and only 66 days to live.
