IO Interactive Scores Major Win with 007: First Light as Bond Returns to Gaming

James Bond has stormed back into gaming with 007: First Light selling 2.7 million units in its first week on sale, marking the publisher’s fastest-selling game ever. The Hitman developer’s ambitious take on the iconic spy franchise has resonated with critics and players alike, earning generally favorable reviews according to review aggregator website Metacritic with scores hovering around 88.

The game depicts James Bond’s origin story, as he embarks on the mission he must complete to earn his licence to kill, offering a fresh perspective on the legendary secret agent. What sets First Light apart is its successful fusion of stealth gameplay with cinematic action. IO Interactive has masterfully fused the core design DNA of their own Hitman series with the sweeping, cinematic momentum of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted, resulting in an incredibly confident, beautifully paced spy thriller.

The momentum continues beyond launch. At Summer Game Fest 2026, IO Interactive revealed a Year One Content roadmap including a new mission called Bawma Will Return coming later in the year, with Lenny Kravitz reprising his role as Bawma, plus a new visual upgrade for PC and a Nintendo Switch 2 launch. Players can also expect New Game Plus, Photo Mode, and regular Tactical Simulation updates throughout the year.

Have you earned your 00 status yet? What approach do you prefer in First Light: silent infiltration or all-out action?
