After a turbulent few years marked by cancellations and uncertainty, Microsoft-owned Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced the return of BlizzCon for September 12-13, 2026, at the Anaheim Convention Center. This marks the showcase’s first return in three years, signaling a renewed commitment to the gaming community that has defined the company for decades.
It will be the first BlizzCon since 2023, and since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard for $68.7 million. The hiatus wasn’t voluntary. Blizzard canceled the event in 2022 and 2024: the former was because of the COVID-19 pandemic and then-recent lawsuits against a number of high-level staff at Blizzard and its parent company accused of misconduct.
For fans of World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, StarCraft, and Hearthstone, the announcement represents more than just a convention date. People gathered at BlizzCon not because Blizzard had returned, but because these fans had never left in the first place. Industry observers noted this was a gathering of people who grew up playing Blizzard games and were still here because they loved those same titles.
BlizzCon has been around since 2005, and helped establish what a developer-specific showcase could be. Without it, the Nintendo Direct or Sony State of Plays may not exist as they currently do.
What are your expectations for BlizzCon 2026? Will Blizzard recapture the magic that made it gaming’s premier fan celebration?
