GTA 6 Reshapes the Entire AAA Release Calendar
The gaming industry has never witnessed anything quite like this. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, and publishers across the globe are scrambling to avoid its devastating commercial impact. No other notable AAA game has an announced release date for October, November, or December, with the entire holiday window vacated by an industry that knows better than to compete with a projected $3 billion game.
The result is an unprecedented bottleneck. Many major upcoming releases have confirmed September release dates with the goal being to stay well clear of GTA VI’s launch, making this the busiest possible month we’ve seen in years. Major franchises are fleeing the traditional holiday window, with titles like Forza Horizon 6 and Crimson Desert shifting to spring releases after historically favoring fall launches.
One head of a major gaming publisher stated, “Rockstar games always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market. We don’t want to be anywhere near that”. The fear is justified. Nearly 90% of UK game sales in the first week after the release of GTA 5 went to Rockstar Games, with the blistering sales pace continuing well into the rest of the month.
Will your wallet survive September’s AAA gauntlet, or are you waiting for Rockstar’s inevitable blockbuster?
