The countdown to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially on. Pre-order customers gained campaign early access starting October 16, 2026, a full week before the October 23 launch, marking one of the franchise’s most generous pre-order incentives to date. But beneath the surface of this latest release lies a major strategic shift that signals changing priorities at Microsoft Gaming.

Modern Warfare 4 will not be available with Game Pass at launch, becoming the first mainline entry in the franchise to skip day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass since the Activision Blizzard acquisition closed. Microsoft confirmed in April 2026 that new Call of Duty titles will no longer be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch, with new entries arriving in the Game Pass library approximately one year after release. This reversal comes after the Game Pass audience increased insignificantly following the day-one availability of recent installments, while Call of Duty sales decreased significantly.

Modern Warfare 4 will be available globally on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC via Battle.net, Xbox on PC, Steam, and Switch 2 on October 23, 2026. For the first time in the franchise’s annual release cycle, the game will not support PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, with Activision confirming the current-gen-only decision.

Will you be picking up Modern Warfare 4 at launch, or waiting for its eventual Game Pass arrival next year?
