Wind-up Knight is a 3D side-scrolling action platformer developed by Robot Invader, originally released on Android in December 2011. You control a small clockwork knight on a simple but punishing mission: rescue the Princess from the evil Black Knight across more than 50 meticulously crafted levels spread over four unique worlds.
Gameplay
Unlike traditional platformers, the knight runs forward automatically. Your job is purely reactive — jump, double jump, slash with your sword, block with your shield, roll, and wall-slide at exactly the right moment. It sounds simple. It is not.
Every level is a relentless sequence of spikes, pits, enemies, and projectiles that demands perfection. One hit and you start over. There is a rhythm-game quality to it: once you learn a level’s pattern, executing it flawlessly feels deeply satisfying.
A key twist — your knight is literally wind-up powered. You must collect wind-up tokens scattered throughout each level, or the knight simply stops and falls over. Collecting is not a bonus; it is a matter of survival.
Beyond just finishing a level, every stage hides a secret card and is filled with coins to collect. Grabbing all coins earns you an A rank, and achieving A ranks across an entire chapter unlocks ultra-difficult “Knightmare” levels. Collecting full sets of cards unlocks special equipment in the Armory — swords, shields, helmets, and armor — giving repeated playthroughs real purpose.
Graphics & Sound
For its time, Wind-up Knight was a graphical showcase on mobile. The 3D visuals are bright, stylized, and full of character. Environments shift from lush meadows to dark dungeons across the four worlds, and the knight himself is charming in motion. The frame rate stays smooth even on mid-range hardware, which is critical for a game that demands split-second reactions.
The original soundtrack by Josh Whelchel deserves special mention. The music changes tone between chapters and perfectly matches the mix of cute aesthetics and punishing difficulty. Even the menu screens are polished and well thought out.
Monetization
The game is free to download, but only the first of four “books” (13 levels each) is unlocked from the start. The remaining books can be purchased for $1.99 each, or all three for $3.99. Alternatively, skilled players can earn enough in-game currency to unlock everything for free. It is a fair model that rewards dedication without forcing anyone to pay.
