League of Legends Classic Sparks Nostalgia-Fueled Surge in One of Gaming’s Biggest Comebacks
Riot Games delivered what thousands of players demanded for years, and the response has been electrifying. League of Legends Classic went live on July 29, 2026, and for the first time in the game’s sixteen-year history, the old Summoner’s Rift is a permanent queue inside the same Riot Client every active player already has installed. League of Legends ranked 2nd in all of Twitch as the most watched game, riding a massive 23.1% 7-day viewership spike with 116,973 average concurrent viewers directly tied to Classic’s launch frenzy.
At launch, League Classic features 60 champions, including all 40 from League of Legends’ original 2009 roster. Each champion returns with pre-rework kits, bringing back beloved mechanics alongside iconic items like Heart of Gold and Deathfire Grasp. According to Executive Producer Paul Bellezza, the idea was born after years of player feedback requesting a way to revisit older versions of League, and the concept eventually became a prototype during Riot’s internal Thunderdome hackathon before evolving into a fully supported game mode.
Community reactions have been mixed but passionate. Despite the excitement surrounding the project when it first leaked on social media and was subsequently revealed, the latest live demo showmatch during the 2026 Mid-Season Invitational finals led to a rather mixed reception on community sites like Twitter and Reddit. Still, Riot announced several major changes, including Classic Skins available entirely for free and serving as the default look.
