AION 2 Soars to Launch Success Despite Community Controversy
NCSoft’s highly anticipated MMORPG AION 2 crashed onto the scene October 5, hitting an all-time peak concurrent player count of 397,905 within hours of its free-to-play global launch on Steam. Since Early Access opened September 30, AION 2 has stayed number one on Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart and in 15 territory charts, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The game dominated Twitch as well, with October 2026 showing 86,938 average viewers and a massive streaming presence that propelled it into the top ranks.
Built on Unreal Engine 5 with a world up to 36 times larger than the original Aion, the sequel delivers on spectacle. Combat, graphics, and exploration using flight have drawn praise from players who appreciate the seamless aerial combat mechanics and stunning visuals. However, the launch has been anything but smooth sailing in terms of reception. As of Oct. 6, 73% of 8,834 reviews on Aion 2’s official Steam page were positive, earning an overall rating of Mostly Positive, though those numbers have since declined as concerns over monetization intensified.
The controversy centers on what players describe as aggressive pay-to-win mechanics and per-character progression passes. Despite the turbulent community sentiment, AION 2’s launch numbers prove that curiosity and brand recognition still drive massive initial interest in ambitious MMORPGs.
