Don’t let the name fool ya… Red Weed isn’t a game about Stoners, but you may want to zone out for awhile and play it. Red Weed is actually a fun little Android game based on a scene from the Musical Version of War of the Worlds, and if you’re a fan of WOTW or HG Wells you’ll probably want to check this one out.
Red Weed is a puzzle game where your job is to stop the slimy Red Weed from spreading. Just like in the movie the Red Weed is bad stuff, and once it starts spreading it’s all over the place and very hard to stop. Your goal is to make your grass tiles the only tiles on the playing board as you try to take over the Red Weed tiles and stop them from spreading. The gameplay is similar to games like Othello or Go, and if you’ve played those games you’ll have no trouble playing Red Weed. Red Weed has 3 difficulty settings, 6 different board designs, and you can even play a little multi-player in Hot Seat mode. The game also features video cut scenes, sound effects, and music from the original musical.
Personally, I loathe musicals. Unless it’s an animated Disney film with some singing or John Water’s Cry Baby I cringe and flip the channel. While I never knew that War of the Worlds had a musical version, I’m glad they made a Red Weed game as it’s quite a bit of fun. The gameplay is simple, but tough and the graphics also have a nice visual style. There currently is no free version of Red Weed to try, but the full version can be had for $0.99 on Google Play.
