Nintendo Switch 2 Crushes Sales Expectations Through Holiday Season

Nintendo has delivered impressive numbers for the Switch 2, reporting a remarkable holiday performance that solidifies the console as one of the fastest-selling gaming systems in history. The company shipped 7.01 million Switch 2 units during the October to December quarter, bringing total Switch 2 hardware sell-in to 17.37 million units for the April to December period.

Perhaps more telling is the sell-through data. Nintendo announced cumulative worldwide sell-through figures for the Nintendo Switch 2 surpassed 15 million units in the fourth week of December 2025, reflecting actual consumer purchases during the crucial holiday shopping season.

The Switch 2 continues to outpace its legendary predecessor. Nintendo Switch 2 closed out 2025 with a total of 4.4 million sold in the US, retaining its status as the fastest-selling console in US history, with no other console having reached 4.4 million sales in the US in its first seven months. Unit sales of Switch 2 are currently 35 percent ahead of PS4 during the same time frame, and nearly double those of the original Switch.

Industry analyst Dr Serkan Toto of Kantan Games offered perspective on these figures. Despite some investors having spread FUD over the last few weeks, it turns out people are still buying the Switch 2. If Nintendo supplied Japan with enough devices throughout 2025, they could most probably have come close to 20 million units sold.

The Switch 2 has sold-in nearly 10 million units more than the original Switch managed during the same timeframe, making it comfortably the fastest-selling console launch. With major titles like Mario Tennis Fever and Pokemon Pokopia on the horizon, Nintendo appears well-positioned to maintain this momentum into 2026.

What do you think will be the killer app that pushes Switch 2 past 25 million units? Will the upcoming first-party lineup sustain this incredible launch momentum?
