Located at the northernmost point of the Skyrim map, amidst the icy tundra east of Winterhold, lies Saarthal, an ancient Nordic Ruin. However, gaining entry into this enigmatic place is no simple task.
Before the Dragonborn can set foot inside, a specific requirement must be fulfilled: joining the esteemed College of Winterhold.
To reach the College of Winterhold from the beginning of the game, follow the main questline to Whiterun and then hire a carriage waiting just outside the city walls, destined for Winterhold.
Once in Winterhold, venture north of the village to encounter a member of the college who will initiate you into its ranks. Following your first lesson with Tolfdir, he leads the students to Saarthal, where you will meet him.
Unlocking the sealed entrance, an awe-inspiring sight awaits, as Saarthal unveils itself as one of the most captivating locations within the entirety of Winterhold.
The quest "Under Saarthal" commences with the Dragonborn assisting a class in conducting archaeology within the ancient ruin. However, an unexpected turn of events occurs, as both the class and Tolfdir, an instructor from the College of Winterhold,
become trapped underground. Initially isolated in a room, the Dragonborn must utilize either a Destruction spell or a powerful Shout from Skyrim's arsenal to dismantle a tablet blocking an entrance.
Following this, a moderately-sized dungeon awaits, filled with Draugr adversaries and perilous traps. The journey also involves an encounter with the enigmatic Psijic Order, adding intrigue to the questline.
Moreover, players must tackle the Under Saarthal puzzle, an essential component for quest completion.
The First Pillar Puzzle involves six pillars, each adorned with three different images. The correct image on each pillar must face the hallway where the player is positioned. Initially, it may appear challenging to discern the correct symbol, but a solution exists within proximity.
By using a reliable light source, such as a torch or the innate night vision of a Khajiit character, players can illuminate the hidden correct image behind each pillar. This illumination aids in progressing through the first stage of the Saarthal puzzle, granting insight into the symbols.
The Second Puzzle occurs after navigating through a room filled with traps and encountering formidable Draugr foes. Inside this room, players will face four additional pillars. Similar to the previous puzzle, the correct images are positioned adjacent to the central totem.
However, turning one pillar affects the orientation of others simultaneously. Fear not, as a specific order can be followed to solve this Saarthal puzzle.
