The Game Awards 2026: French Indie Clair Obscur Makes History with Record-Breaking Sweep

A small French studio has achieved the unthinkable, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 claiming nine awards at The Game Awards 2026—the most wins in the ceremony’s history—including the coveted Game of the Year trophy. The turn-based RPG became the first debut title and first French-developed game to win Game of the Year, while also sweeping victories in Best Indie Game categories.

Developed by Montpellier-based Sandfall Interactive with a team of just thirty people, the game’s success represents a seismic shift in an industry dominated by massive studios with hundred-million-dollar budgets. This was a less than ten million dollar project that competed against gaming giants and won. The game won all but one of its jury-nominated awards, losing only Best Audio Design to Battlefield 6 and the fan-voted Players’ Voice to Wuthering Waves.

The impact was immediate and substantial. Following the ceremony, more than 300,000 copies sold in five days, with the game’s engagement tripling and Steam reaching 57,000 concurrent players. Even French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Sandfall for its success, calling it a historic moment for French gaming.

The sweep highlights two major themes: the rise of independent studios and the internationalization of gaming awards, with half of the Game of the Year nominees being indie titles. For an industry struggling with unsustainable budgets and development cycles, Clair Obscur proves that creativity, passion, and tight game design can triumph over sheer financial muscle.

What does this historic victory mean for the future of independent game development and turn-based RPGs?
