China Gaming Market Shatters Records as Industry Enters New Growth Era

China’s gaming industry closed out 2026 with a bang, posting sales revenue of 350.79 billion yuan (approximately $49.8 billion), marking a 7.68 percent year-on-year increase that solidifies the country’s position as a global gaming powerhouse. The player base expanded to a historic 683 million users, while regulatory approvals reached 1,771 games, the highest total since 2018, signaling a dramatic shift in the world’s most valuable gaming market.

This dual growth milestone represents more than just impressive numbers. The expansion was driven by increased government policy support, extraordinary overseas performances, and technology innovations that are reshaping how games reach Chinese consumers. Of the approved titles, 1,676 were developed domestically, while foreign projects accounted for just 95 approvals, demonstrating Beijing’s continued focus on homegrown talent while cautiously reopening to international releases.

Mobile games continued dominating the market, generating roughly 257.07 billion yuan and accounting for around 73.3 percent of total revenue. Meanwhile, Chinese games excelled overseas with sales reaching $20.46 billion, a 10.23 percent increase, proving that domestic developers are competing successfully on the global stage alongside industry giants like Tencent and NetEase.
