Microsoft Xbox Backward Compatibility Comes to PC

Gaming News: Microsoft Xbox Backward Compatibility Comes to PC

Game News

Microsoft just made a move that Windows gamers have been requesting for years. Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC launched yesterday in early release, starting with four classic original Xbox games now playable on PC and handhelds for the first time ever. Microsoft is positioning PC backward compatibility as the start of a broader game-preservation effort designed to keep older Xbox experiences playable across modern hardware.

The first games are BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. While the initial lineup is modest, Xbox VP Jason Ronald stated this marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve Xbox games from the past and bring them to PC over time. Anyone who already owns these titles digitally on console can also now play them on PC or handheld, with support for Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Players can customize graphics settings, including up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync support, Fullscreen and Windowed display modes, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and more. Perhaps most exciting for achievement hunters, Microsoft will bring one of the top fan-requested features to select original Xbox games on both console and PC later this year: Achievements, with the first four games being updated to include them in the coming months.

This announcement coincides with what may be Xbox Game Pass’s strongest month of 2026. Xbox Game Pass subscribers are getting a stacked July lineup including Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, Palworld 1.0, and Halo: Campaign Evolved, with more titles still to be announced.

Could this backward compatibility push signal a fundamental shift in how Microsoft approaches platform boundaries between console and PC?
