Subnautica 2: The Underwater Survival Phenomenon Dominating Steam and Twitch
Subnautica 2 has sold 4 million copies across Xbox Series X/S and PC since its launch, cementing Unknown Worlds Entertainment’s sequel as one of 2026’s biggest gaming success stories. With peak concurrent players exceeding 651,000 across all platforms and Steam alone accounting for more than 467,000 of those—approximately nine times the all-time peak of the original Subnautica—this underwater survival adventure has exceeded even the loftiest expectations.
The game’s streaming presence has been equally impressive. Subnautica 2 achieved over 413,000 Peak Viewers on Twitch during its Early Access launch, and climbed to the rank of the fourth most popular gaming category on Twitch for May 2026, outperformed only by League of Legends, Counter-Strike and Path of Exile 2. The game currently maintains its overwhelmingly positive reception, sitting at 91% positive reviews from over 103,000 ratings on Steam.
The latest update, Hotfix 3, launched on June 1, reducing the Nibbler’s perception range and upgrading DLSS to version 4.5, addressing player feedback about creature behavior and performance optimization. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Design lead Anthony Gallegos recently teased the upcoming EA 1.1 content drop, which will introduce the Collector Leviathan’s home as a new region, featuring a new chassis that brings back one of the most requested player experiences, as well as fresh creatures and resources.
What makes Subnautica 2 particularly special is how it balances familiar gameplay loops with meaningful innovations like the new Adaptations system and optional four-player co-op, all while maintaining that signature atmospheric tension that made the original a cult classic.
