THE CONTROLLER COMEBACK: VALVE’S STEAM CONTROLLER RETURNS TO MARKET
Valve’s Steam Controller launches May 4, 2026, at 10:00 AM Pacific Time for $99, marking the company’s ambitious return to the controller market after discontinuing the original model in 2019. This isn’t just a hardware refresh, it’s Valve’s strategic play to build a complete gaming ecosystem around its Steam platform.
The original Steam Controller saw low sales that resulted in Valve pulling the plug in 2019, but the company learned from that experience. Since then, Valve has had big hits including the Valve Index VR headset and the Steam Deck, which kicked off the handheld gaming PC category. The new controller benefits directly from these successes.
The most noticeable difference is that the design is now more conventional, with two analog thumbsticks located below the face buttons. The controller uses TMR magnetic thumbsticks that don’t depend on physical contact, eliminating stick drift issues that have plagued many gamepads. Battery life is rated at 35+ hours, and it includes a magnetic charging puck for wireless connectivity.
Valve has not yet announced pricing or release dates for the Steam Machine or Steam Frame, both revealed alongside the controller last year, with delays tied to supply and logistics, including an AI-driven RAM shortage.
Will this controller succeed where its predecessor failed, or will PC gamers stick with their trusted peripherals?
