Monster Hunter Wilds Struggles to Maintain Launch Momentum Despite Record-Breaking Start

Monster Hunter Wilds surpassed eight million units in just three days, becoming the fastest title to reach this milestone in Capcom company history. By the end of March 2025, it had reached ten million sales. Yet beneath these impressive numbers lies a troubling reality for Capcom’s flagship franchise.

The game peaked at over 1.38 million concurrent players on Steam, making it the 5th biggest release on Steam of all time by that metric. However, the celebration was short-lived. Most negative reviews were concerned about the poor performance of the game since its launch, and while both Title Updates 1 and 2 were aimed to improve the game’s performance on Windows, users still reported many issues and continued to drive negative reviews.

According to Capcom’s results for the three months ended September 30, 2025, Wilds sold just 160k units during the period, fewer than in the previous quarter when the game sold 477k units. Since it sold ten million copies in its first month, that means fewer than 750,000 copies have been sold in the seven months since. Even more concerning, MH Wilds’ concurrent player count has been cut in half starting May, and in comparison, MH Worlds’ third month on Steam saw over 100,000 concurrent players, which surpasses MH Wilds’ third month with around 40,000 concurrent players.

Capcom has been working to address these issues. Patch 1.041 for Monster Hunter Wilds delivers long-promised optimisation updates to the game on PC and consoles, implementing both CPU and GPU optimisations. The question remains whether these improvements come too late to recapture the momentum of that explosive launch.

Has performance finally improved enough to bring you back to the hunt, or have you moved on to other games?
