Children who play video games and use mobile phones regularly are at greater risk of suffering pain in their fingers, experts warn.

Researchers found that schoolchildren who spend several hours a day playing on Xbox consoles and iPhones reported “high levels” of joint pain afterwards.

“Our study has shown the negative impact that playing computer games and using mobile phones can have on the joints of young children, raising concerns about the health impact of modern technology later in life,” said Professor Yusuf Yazici of the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, in a paper presented at the annual congress of the European League Against Rheumatism.

A report launched at the same conference in London on Wednesday accuses the Government of failing to meet the needs of the estimated 8million people in England with musculoskeletal diseases such as arthritis and lower back pain.

Arthritis Care says that although the NHS spends £4.76billion a year treating the conditions – the fourth-highest area of spending – there is a postcode lottery of care across the country and no leadership.

It is calling on ministers to develop a national strategy for musculoskeletal diseases, so all patients can access better care.

Jane Asher, the actress who is president of Arthritis Care, said: “If you’re lobbying for something against a set of targets and responsibilities, it makes such a difference.
