| Nvidia is launching its latest mobile graphics chip, the GeForce GTX 560M, with twice the performance of the previous version. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based graphics chip maker is unveiling the mobile graphics chip at the Computex 2011 trade show in Taipei this week. The launch shows that Nvidia continues to focus on the mobile graphics market for laptops even as it expands into other areas such as smartphone processors. The GTX 560M has twice as much performance as the GeForce GT 540 chip that came before it. Graphically, the 560M has a lot more oomph. The 540 had a resolution of 1366 x 768 and could run at 30 to 40 frames per second with a special smoothing effect called antialiasing turned off. By contrast, the 560M can run at 60 frames per second at a full high-definition resolution of 1920 x 1080 with antialiasing and other effects turned on. Using Nvidia’s Optimus technology, the laptop can switch between integrated graphics, which use less power, and full stand-alone graphics when more performance is needed. With Optimus, the 560M can be used in computers with up to five hours of battery life. Eight different gaming-focused notebooks are expected to use the new 560M chips, with prices starting around $999 and up. The 540 can be used in laptops that cost $599 or so. The new laptops are coming from MSI, Alienware, Asus, Toshiba and Clevo. |
