| Just earlier this week, news reports claimed that Nokia is not just in trouble thanks to Apple and Android. It stated that competition also comes from “white box” phone makers – smaller companies that build very cheap mobile phones and sell them in modest quantities. Today, mobile media company BuzzCity has claimed that it’s not just Nokia – based on games downloads from it’s Djuzz service, BuzzCity reckons all the major phone makers could be in for surprise. What’s a white box? The phrase “white box” originally sprand up around home computers. If you bought all the components yourself and assembled it at home, you could get a great machine for much lower price than if you bought from a brand like Dell. These un-branded machines were called White Boxes – borrowing from the phrase “white label”. White Box phones are a little different. They’re certainly not un-branded – instead, they come from mid-sized manufacturers that you might not have heard of. BuzzCity refers to MicroMax from India, Nexian from Indonesia / Malaysia, K-Touch in China and many more. These companies produce smaller runs of mobiles and sell them locally – usually at FAR more competitive prices than the big name brands. What’s BuzzCity claiming? BuzzCity runs an extremely popular games service called Djuzz, which delivers free games for mobiles. It supports high-end devices, but it’s really geared towards the lower end of the market, and can deliver games for Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, Flash and BlackBerry. By analysing the download data of the games it shifts (which was 6.5 million in October alone), BuzzCity has seen a massive increase in the number of white box phones being used. They represented 8% of the total market in September – this had risen to 20% during October. Dr KF Lai, CEO at BuzzCity comments: “’White box’ competition will continue to cannibalise sales from the major manufacturers, largely by mimicking handsets like iPhone or BlackBerry, while offering more features such as multiple SIM capabilities, at lower price points.” |
