ARM predict their Mali chip will produce the equivalent amount of graphic power as the current generation PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 console come in 18 months time. Boasting great graphics power, ARM also said that Moore's law was not the only way to achieve the power feat. Moore's law recognises that in every two years doubling the amount of transistors on circuitry becomes affordable. And although ARM still believe that Moore's law is still relevant, the company understands that there's more to achieving great levels of computational power than throwing hardware at the problem. Current mobile phone manufacturers are aligning themselves with application markets as the number of consumers using the internet, applications and gaming rises. The prospect of having such gaming potential in a handheld device—especially in that of a mobile phone—is one that could influence the industry. It has to be asked then, how many people would folk out hundreds of dollars for the next generation PlayStation handheld when they can purchase a phone on a contract for much less? At the moment ARM's current T604 chip produces the equivalent graphics power as the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox. That technology has already influenced how people use their mobile phones and tablet PC's. The question is, with much more grunt how much further will ARM's Mali chip take it? |
